Trainwreck (2015): Amy Character Analysis

Trainwreck stars Amy Schumer as Amy, our protagonist with a serious allergy to commitment. Basically, she can’t handle serious relationships. In addition, Amy refuses to accept the idea of having a guy genuinely in love with her. However, things are about to change when she meets Aaron…

There’s nothing extraordinary about the plot, but the film was very enjoyable to watch. A real train wreck could be a way to describe the protagonist. However, was Amy a real hot mess?

Amy – Character Analysis

Here’s a prime example of what Amy does to her relationships, she tends to self-sabotage them. By the way, John Cena’s comic timing is amazing. I did not expect that from a professional wrestler.

I have this theory: if you have fucked up parents, you’ll end up as a pretty fucked up adult. No matter how hard you try to break the mould, baggage will always catch up to you.

In Amy’s case her “beloved” father was the one responsible for her pessimist views on “love”: he taught his two daughters from a very young age not to believe in monogamy. Now, I believe each individual absorbs information in a different way: some digest it the way it is and others question it.

Amy accepted her dad’s information as the truth and decided to manage her romantic relationships in a very superficial way. Her sister on the other hand, decided to question the “truth” and choose another lifestyle for herself.

5 Reasons Why Amy Is Not A Trainwreck

Now, let’s get back to the initial question. Was Amy a hot mess? In my opinion, Amy’s life is not as bad as some might put it.

REASON #1: Amy is financially independent. Well, she makes enough money to pay for the rent of her apartment.

REASON #2: Amy is getting “it”. Her inability to stay in a long-term relationship has not prevented her from being sexually active.

REASON #3: Amy has managed to stay “clean”. Despite of her countless one-night stands, she never caught anything (that’s impressive to say the least).

REASON #4: Amy shows up. She might party hard, but she can handle it. In addition, she always manages somehow to show up at work.

REASON #5: Amy has a relatively “humble lifestyle”. Apart from alcohol and weed, she doesn’t have that many vices.

Having said that, Amy has a lot a good things going for her. Actually, I believe her life is more put together than one may think. Therefore, if I were Amy and people called me a “trainwreck”, I would say: “No. I’m not a trainwreck, I just chose a different lifestyle.”
