Beyoncé is back with a new music video: “Sorry”. This is the infamous song that let everyone wondering who’s “Becky with the good hair” and what the hell did Jay-Z do?
Rumour has it, that Becky is a woman named Rachel Roy. Wait a minute, it gets better… First let start with Rachel, she’s a fashion designer previously married to Damon Dash. Who is he? He’s the man that Aaliyah was going to get married to. Those of you who are a little bit “older” probably know who Aaliyah was and how she passed away.
At her peak, Aaliyah was like Beyoncé when she released her first album “Dangerously In Love”. When Queen B dropped her iconic single “Crazy In Love”, she was the “it girl”. Every girl wanted to be like her, every guy wanted to be with her and everyone knew the lyrics to her smash hits. Aaliyah did what a lot of artists aspire to do nowadays. She was pretty successful with her music and starred in a couple of films as the leading actress. We are talking about the late 90s and early ’00s… so it’s was a pretty big deal to do that much at such a early stage of her career.
There’s even a bigger debate: many speculate that Aaliyah would have been bigger than Beyoncé if she was still alive. It’s pretty much like the debate between Selena and Jennifer Lopez. Who knows? All I know is that J.Lo and B are still in the game because they haven’t stopped innovating.
Back to Beyoncé’s “Sorry” video. It’s consistent. Still badass. You can tell how famous Beyoncé is just by looking at her acquaintances. She got Serena Williams (n.1 Tennis player in the world) in her video. Not only, Serena is flaunting herself in a very tight bottomless dress (I’ve no idea about the technical term), she’s also twerking as if the world was going to end tomorrow. Price…less!
Now… let’s get down to the lyrics (just a small sample):
He trying to roll me up, I ain’t picking up Headed to the club, I ain’t thinking ’bout you Me and my ladies sip my D’ussé cup I don’t give a fuck, chucking my deuces up Suck on my balls, pause, I had enough I ain’t thinking ’bout you I ain’t thinking ’bout
This woman is spitting fire: not only she doesn’t give a f*ck but she’s bending gender stereotypes as well. “Suck on my balls”? Whoa, Beyoncé is really on another level. As I said previously, artists need to innovate to stay in the game and this is what I see in Beyoncé. In addition, it’s refreshing to see this facet of hers — a more raw, a less apologetic and a less “pretty” Beyoncé.
